    SPRING UP A WELL

    May 3, 2023

Jesus spoke to the woman at the well telling her that we need more than natural water to sustain us, to give us new life. “Jesus… said to her, ‘Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.’” (John 4:13-14)

Jesus also told the Jews at the Feast of Tabernacles that they could receive this living water of the word of God. We too need this clean, fresh, supernatural water of the Holy Spirit! It will be like a well springing up, filling us, giving saving grace.

“‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive.” (John 7:37-39)

He was echoing the Father’s words since Jesus and the Father are the best spiritual water and food source. “‘Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters… Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and let your soul delight itself in abundance.’” (Isa. 55:1-2)

Before I knew this years ago, my favorite place to talk to God was looking out over the water at our family cottage. Drawn to the lake, alone, especially in my teen years, I would pour my heart out to the Lord, tears streaming down my face. I did not know yet that I could have a dialogue with Him or that God’s Son would satisfy my thirst so that I could pour out to others. Jesus died for those tears, but it was even comforting to have a monologue with the Father. I knew He heard me.

When we thirst for what God gives and receive it, Jesus’ word is fulfilled:

“‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.’” (Matt. 5:6)

“The promise of the Father” (Acts 1:4) was to pour out of His Spirit on all flesh and that His servants, male and female, would hear “the testimony of Jesus” (Rev. 19:10) and prophesy it. Sometimes that might be just to themselves.

This reminds me of when the Lord first opened a well inside of me back in the eighties. I had invited Jesus to come in and eat with me. At first I knew the words I was hearing were from God. But then I wanted proof that it really was from Him, the source of the River of life. At a Charismatic prayer meeting we were told that if we were not sure if a word we were hearing inside was from God and not from the devil or ourselves, we could ask God to give it to someone else. Then when they spoke it out, that confirmed the source. “[He] confirms the word of His servant.” (Isa. 44:26)

We can also know it is a true word when we see the fruit of it. For instance, many times I have heard in a situation, “Be not afraid” bubble up causing fear to leave me and faith to arise. Thanks be to God, Jesus is with me as He promised.

When townspeople received a telephone for the first time years ago, it must have been quite a marvelous thing to hear a voice speaking to them from miles away. Likewise when Jesus first opens a well in us, it is marvelous to hear a voice speaking from within, from God Himself! That living water from heaven is from the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ and the Father. How fantastic is that!!!

“Truth shall spring out of the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven.”  (Ps. 85:11) God made man of the dust of the earth and breathed life into him.Now His Holy Spirit of truth breathes new life into us and satisfies our thirst with “‘a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.’” Jesus, the living Word of God, came to bring us life so that we do not have to die in our sins. This is one way that He does it. “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend [overcome] it.” (John 1:4-5)

But we are not to drink from a broken cistern of false prophecy, nor speak foul things or with words from the wrong source. “Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening?” (James 3:10-11)

Instead of turning to false gods or idols, we can lift up our hands to the Father in Jesus’ name and partake of the future glory of Zion.

“Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are fearful-hearted, ‘Be strong, do not fear! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God; He will come and save you.’ Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened. And the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the dumb sing.

For waters shall burst forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert. The parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water.”  (Isa. 35:3-7)

If the well in you has become shut and perhaps filled with dirt by the enemy, you can re-dig it and speak to the water telling it to spring up once again, clean and pure. (Rev. 22:1) Jesus knows the truth and will defend you. “My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.” (1 John 2:1-2)

     Hallelujah!
